Kuan Yin has been worshipped by Buddhists for thousands of years. She is also known as Kannon (in Japan), Guanyin (in China), Milo Shan (a Chinese Princess) and Tara (in Mongolia and Tibet.
Kuan Yin is thought of as the Mother of Mercy and is considered as being the equivalent of the Christian Mother Mary; A Buddhist Madonna. Her shortened name (Kuan Yin) means “Hearer of Sounds” while her full name (Kuan Shih Yin) means “Hearer of the World’s Sounds”.
Legend says that as she stood on the doorway to heaven she heard thousands of people crying out in pain and misery, as a result of which she chose to stay on the earth plane in order to help ease the suffering. This lovely lady is considered as being one of the greatest and most revered Bodhisattvas and is the very essence of compassion for all of humanity. It is widely believed that Kuan Yin helps to remove obstacles, erases past offences, and dispenses mercy, healing and spiritual graces, while always meeting the true inner needs of the soul.
Kuan Yin is also revered as the Protector of women, sailors, merchants and children; images of her are widely placed around homes workplaces and hospitals as well as on ships.
