Root Chakra

Root Chakra

The Sanskrit name for the base or root Chakra is Muladhara meaning “root”. Generally accepted as the first chakra it is located at the base of the spine, in the perineum and is considered as the foundation of the whole Chakra system. It is the “survival” Chakra and its main function is to respond to any problems we may have relating to our survival needs such as eating, drinking, clothing, shelter, sleeping, exercising, recovery from illness, earning a living – our basic needs for our individual senses of safety and security. As part of this survival instinct, it has a need for sex – for procreation and the survival of the species rather than pleasure! This Chakra is all about finding the environment that your body needs; if this need is balanced, your base Chakra is balanced and your survival will happen naturally, you will find you enjoy and develop the skills you need for your survival. Each of us has to decide what things are essential for our own survival – our own needs, our own security. If our root Chakra is balanced and healthy, we are able to focus our lives on other things such as learning, creativity and relationships. When the first chakra is clear and balanced we feel secure, healthy, alive, optimistic, grounded, stable and full of vitality. We can use good "common sense" to balance our finances as well as our everyday responsibilities and still initiate new activities and interests. Our eliminatory system functions well, neural activity in our legs and feet is healthy, and our ability to initiate sexual encounters is comfortable and natural.

However, If there is a problem with the root chakra, then we will note that we seem to have to cope with repeated threats to our security and survival e.g. keep changing jobs, having to keep moving, recurrent health problems, weight problems, and or a general fear for safety. An imbalance in the root chakra will lead to a sense of insecurity or we can become absent minded / forgetful because we are not fully grounded. We may also have difficulties with finances, day to day life and securities.  We can become self-indulgent and self-centred and suffer from depression and grief. We may suffer from haemorrhoids, constipation, sciatica, or prostate problems. If this chakra is not working properly it negatively influences the legs, bones, adrenal glands, colon, kidneys and spinal column.

Too much energy flowing through this chakra, could cause selfishness, greed, an over powering manner, irritation, aggression and sadism, whilst too little energy flowing through it could possibly will cause anxiety, lack of confidence, and a lack of ability to complete things. There may also be a leaning towards feeling unloved and masochistic.

The root chakra also rules the male sex glands and the testosterone that they secrete. This testosterone drives the males in our society, and the male polarity of our psyche, to perpetuate and protect humanity.

When our first chakra is closed, it is difficult for energy to infuse our physical body. We are then out of touch with our own power to listen to and respond to the needs of our body and the home of our body, Earth. Our actions then become reactions, and our ability to take responsibility for our personal power is diluted into a dismal struggle for survival.

However, when the first chakra is awakened, spirit lives in matter and all of our behaviour is directed by spirit, the spirit within our physical bodies and the spirit within our Earth. All of the above emotional, behavioural, and physical health issues have to do with the ability to let go. We cannot let go of our sadness, let go of material sources of comfort when finances require, or even let go of the waste material of our bodies. If we cannot release what is holding us back, we cannot move forward.

Difficulties with our sciatic nerve and problems with our legs and feet occur; prostate problems can arise from frustrated sexual or creative drives. In conjunction with our basic survival needs, the sense of smell is related to this chakra. Our sense of smell is our most primitive sense, and is the first sense that awakens upon our physical birth. The receptors for smell are located at the base of our brain and feeds directly into our limbic system, which is the area of memory and emotion. Therefore, aromas can immediately access emotional memories stored in our unconscious minds.

The first chakra represents our first two years from birth. This is the time before we have completed our process of individualisation and still perceive ourselves as a part of our parents. This chakra represents our struggle to come to terms with our physical life and physical body.  Survival consciousness is the primary state of the infant, and if this phase of life is properly taken care of, it should not be a recurrent issue later in life. Children who are abandoned, separated from their mothers at birth (such as incubator babies), physically abused, or suffering from severe childhood illnesses will be more likely to have first chakra problems throughout their lives. The result can be the situational problems mentioned above, as well as psychological problems having to do with lack of focus or discipline, dependency on others, (unable to stand on one’s own two feet), possible eating disorders, feeling vague and "spacey," and a general inability to "let down and relax."

Anthropologically, the first chakra represents the time when we were cave dwellers and living day to day. To assist with our survival, we worshipped animals and other aspects of our physical environment.

This chakra rules the lowest vibration of our body and has the slowest wavelength. Its symbol is a lotus with four petals within which is a downward-pointing triangle, symbolizing the root energy.  The root chakra is the basis of both our masculine and feminine energy. It represents our masculine will and male sexual organs as well as the feminine energy of the Goddess Kundalini. Therefore, a man can learn to integrate his feminine power and a woman can learn to integrate her masculine power through the clearing and opening of this chakra Even though, the first chakra has many masculine qualities it is also the "seat of the Goddess Kundalini" and is therefore often associated with our relationship with our mothers and with Mother Earth. Our relationships with our mother set up our attitude toward home, security, and money. If we are cut off from our roots, we feel cut off from the earth as well.

The endocrine gland associated with the first chakra is the adrenal glands. There are two adrenal glands located with one on top of each of the two kidneys. The adrenal glands release of a hormone called adrenaline which activates the fight/flight syndrome, which prepares us for “fight or flight.” Release of adrenaline and activation of fight/flight is brought on by real or imagined danger. Therefore, our emotions can activate a release of adrenaline when we feel extreme fear or even chronic anxiety.

As discussed above, the first chakra rules our survival consciousness and represents our deepest unconscious and most primitive self. This chakra represents the brainstem part of our brain, our centre for life support, without which we cannot survive. It resonates to the colour red, although black is a secondary colour. Red is the lowest frequency in the human visible light spectrum and is also the colour of anger, grounding and or vitality. Red energises the root chakra and enhances the physical life force of the body.

Red crystals such as ruby, and garnet have a powerful effect on the physical body, often bringing a senses of warmth, stimulation and comfort. Among the crystals associated with this chakra are ruby, bloodstone, garnet, black onyx, red jasper, but all red or black crystals may work with this chakra.

The astrological sign associated with the root chakra is Taurus. The symbol for Taurus is the bull. Like our root chakra, the bull is a symbol of masculine power and fertility. The bull roots in the earth with his front hooves and lowers his nostrils toward the ground to warn any who would threaten his "herd". There are many cows in the herd, but only the strongest bull will be able to preserve the genetic integrity of the group.
